Torus Motion ships India-built axial flux motors for EVs, AGVs and industrial drives

The Chennai deeptech firm, once Torus Robotics, pairs disc-shaped motors with its own controllers after a TNIFMC-led seed and years of R&D aimed at cutting imported powertrains.

Chennai-based Torus Motion designs and builds axial flux motors and matching controllers that it describes as India's first production-ready axial flux powertrain. Exceptional Technology's October 2026 deep dive explains the geometry: magnetic flux runs parallel to the shaft so the motor flattens into a disc that is shorter, denser and easier to package than a conventional radial can. RuntimeBRT highlighted the company on 15 October 2026 as an Indian challenger to China's hold on axial flux motors after five years of R&D.

According to Exceptional Technology, the V1 series targets two-wheelers, golf carts and automated guided vehicles at 48, 60 or 72 volts with up to 10 kW peak power and 40 Nm of torque, while the heavier V2 series for L5 three-wheelers, forklifts and tow tugs pushes up to 20 kW and 60 Nm. Across the range the company quotes peak efficiencies up to 98 percent, IP67 sealing and packaging roughly 50 percent more compact than an equivalent radial motor. Torus also builds TESC Gen 5 controllers with field-oriented control, automotive-grade CAN, over-the-air updates and compatibility with BLDC, PMSM, IPM and axial flux motors.

The company was founded in 2019 as Torus Robotics by SRM University mechatronics engineers Vignesh M, Vibhakar Senthil and Abbhi Vignesh K. Entrackr and The Hindu reported in February 2024 that it raised a $470,000 seed round led by the Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Fund Management Corporation under the TN Emerging Sector Seed Fund, with Forge Innovation & Ventures and IIT Bombay's SINE participating. YourStory's September 2025 Tamil Nadu industrial startups feature added that StartupTN's TANSEED programme, MeitY Startup Hub, UNIDO and the Department of Science and Technology are among its backers, and that the firm is scaling toward tens of thousands of units for EV and industrial customers.
