Cashfree opens hosted checkout to AI agents with WebMCP, while shoppers keep the final UPI PIN
Checkout for Agents lets browser AI assistants read the order and show a UPI QR on Cashfree's redirect checkout with no merchant code change, and Cashfree says AI traffic is still under 1% of sessions.

Cashfree Payments launched Checkout for Agents on 6 November 2026, a WebMCP based layer on its hosted redirect checkout that lets AI shopping agents read order totals and available payment methods without scraping page HTML. Inc42 and The Economic Times both reported the launch. Cashfree's own product blog says the company is the first payments firm in India to publish WebMCP tools on checkout, and that merchants already on Hosted Checkout need no integration change.
WebMCP exposes structured tools such as get_checkout_summary, list_payment_methods, open_payment_method, show_upi_qr and get_payment_status. Cashfree and Hindustan Times say that path can cut the tokens an agent burns by more than 40% compared with screenshot and DOM crawling. The Economic Times quoted co founder Reeju Datta saying AI agents still account for less than 1% of checkout sessions across its merchants, and that humans stay in the loop to review the order and authenticate payment.
Security limits are part of the pitch. Company docs and ET reporting say agents cannot enter card details through WebMCP, personally identifiable information is masked before sharing, and a UPI payment is still authorised with the customer's PIN inside their own UPI app. Support today is limited to redirect hosted checkout in Chromium browsers that expose WebMCP, such as Chrome 149 origin trials on Cashfree pages. Popup and inline checkouts are not supported yet.
The launch lands as Indian fintechs race to own agentic commerce rails. Inc42 notes peers such as Razorpay are also shipping agent style tools. For Cashfree the bet is early: traffic is tiny, browser support is still rolling out, and the product stops short of letting an agent approve money movement. Two independent outlets plus Cashfree's documentation confirm what shipped on 6 November: an agent can help open the payment path, and the shopper still finishes it.
